DID YOU KNOW?

Did you know that the story of an army hero named Abner Doubleday inventing the game of baseball in 1839 in a city called Cooperstown is not only fake, but is also a claim that was never even mentioned by Doubleday himself in his whole lifetime? The real inventor of the game is a bookseller from New York named Alexander Cartwright, who founded a team called The New York Knickerbocker Baseball Club in 1839, wrote the rules in 1845, and organized the first game in the United States of America on June 19, 1846 which was held in Hoboken, New Jersey. Be that as it may, the first game of baseball played in the Western Hemisphere dates back to June 1838 and was played in Ontario, Canada. Baseball’s most direct ancestors appear to be two English games: rounders and cricket. Cartwright would codify a new set of rules that would form the basis for the modern version of the game: the three-strike rule, foul lines, and a diamond-shaped infield.

In 1850, the National Association of Baseball Players was formed and the National League for baseball began in 1876. By 1903, the American League began challenging the National League in the World Series, and organized baseball leagues, along with other forms of media it has influenced, started to spread all over the world.
