Free note-taking application

The EverNote Corporation developed this free app to record notes, task management, organization, and archiving. Initially released on Android and iOS, it received a Windows launch on 7 October 2020. You can access any of your Notebooks across multiple devices with your account information and an internet connection.

What is EverNote?

EverNote is an application developed for mobile and Microsoft devices that lets you store all your text notes and image files in a central location. It’s a convenient program to access notes and files often. With the ability to access the information on any device where you saved your account, you can quickly open the Notebooks on your phone when life gets busy.

You can create and store your notes in several formats, including text, lists, photos, and saved web pages. Extra features let you annotate images and PDF files with EverNote so that you can communicate ideas and feedback visually. There’s even a web clipping function to capture screenshots if you want to share it with your team later.

Sometimes, you might want to write notes by hand using a recording tablet or device. If you’re looking for specific words in your content, the NoteBook searches through the text for it. More features include document scanning, custom templates, and team spaces.

EverNote permits integration with other apps, should the need arise. Any occasion may call for you to send an email from your notes or import tasks from another application. There are over five programs you can connect to, including Microsoft Teams, Slack, and Gmail.

Can I use EverNote offline?

The top benefit of EverNote is that you can open your Notebooks from anywhere, which is helpful if you’re always on the go. However, it requires an internet connection to synchronize, open documents, and save changes. You can still access your files and make new notes on Windows when you’re offline, though.

All of your stored Notebooks save on your local computer in a folder. You can access any of your information that only contains the latest data from the last time it synced. The app lets you make any new notes, which will update in the server when your internet connection goes live again.

If you make offline notes on other apps, such as on Android or iOS devices, you won't be able to view any of the changes on your Windows PC or Microsoft account until you’ve connected your phone to the internet. Fewer offline options are available for mobile than PC.

Is Premium EverNote worth it?

While EverNote is free for Windows, it has limited functions compared to the Premium and Business plans. The former only lets you sync up to two devices, while Premium allows access across unlimited platforms. You’ll also receive an upgrade from 60 MB to 10GB for the monthly upload limit.

The free version removes your rights for accessing offline information. While you can still apply rich formatting to your text, you can only add PDF annotations in the Premium edition. You’ll be able to create custom templates and save files up to 200 MB in size if you subscribe.

If you upgrade to the Business Plan, you’ll receive more tools. You’ll have access to all the functions from the Basic and Premium packages with a few new additions. Extra features include team shared spaces, activity history, 20 GB monthly upload limit, and a central admin account.

What's better than Evernote?

Many people have queried if EverNote is better than OneNote. The feature that makes the latter outshine the former is the Ribbon function for Windows. It gives you quick access to eight tabs, making everything easier to perform and open. However, EverNote takes the trophy for its web-clipping tool.

Notion stands up as a great competitor against OneNote and EverNote. It’s relatively new in the industry compared to the other two, but it has several functions for consolidation tools into one space. Notion is also the more affordable option, but you’ll have access to fewer features in the free plan.

Finally, you may want to try Google Keep for your note-taking needs. It’s a lightweight platform that looks like a virtual bulletin board full of sticky notes. The theme is minimalistic, with only a few formatting options.

How to install EverNote on Windows

Before you proceed, you’ll need to download the EverNote installation file to your PC. When the download is complete, Windows will prompt you to run the file. You may need to grant the system permission to install the program.

The installation client will ask which language you prefer, with the English default set. You’ll also need to specify where you’d like to save the file, so you'll want to make sure you have enough space on your hard drive. Finally, you just need to accept the terms and conditions to begin installing EverNote.

Save your thoughts anywhere you go

EverNote is a handy tool to jot down notes anywhere, at any time. You can create text or image captions, whether you’re online or offline. It doesn’t matter if you choose to type or write them in, given that the system can search for words either way.

While the note-taking app is free, there are limits to what you can do. You’ll only be able to sync to two devices. Also, you won’t have access to team sharing and note size has a small maximum limit.

Yet, despite this, the program is a suitable option to download.
