Play music from Amazon's cloud or your device

Amazon Music is a free–to–download audio application by Amazon Mobile LLC. It lets users enjoy their Amazon music library on their smart devices. In addition, Amazon Prime members have access to a plethora of tracks and playlists that can be streamed without charge, among other perks.

Offering a wide selection of audio media, the Amazon Music app — much like Spotify — enables users to explore millions of tracks and podcasts as well as receive tailored recommendations based on their listening habits and preferences. However, listeners need to sign in or create an Amazon account before diving deep into the app’s diverse audio library.

How do you get started?

Once you open the Amazon Music app, you’ll be presented with an option to sign up or log into your account. Assuming you’re a new user, select “Create Account” and three text boxes will appear. In those boxes, type your first name and last name, email address, and password. After that, tap on “Create your Amazon account” and a one-time password will be sent to your provided email address.

After typing your OTP, the app will ask you to provide your mobile number. This is to ensure that your account is safe and secure. Automated security alerts will also be sent to your number, so that’s something to take note of, too. However, you can only remove your phone number via Amazon’s Login & Security as Amazon Music doesn’t have this option. Once you enroll your phone number, you will receive an OTP that you need to type to complete the registration process.

Then, select at least three of your favorite artists from the app’s categories, such as pop, rock, and many more. Oddly enough, the Pick Podcasts option is greyed out until you select one artist. In Pick Podcasts, you can pick three or more podcast topics, from comedy to sports. Tap the “Done” button and your library will be tailored according to your preferences.

What can you do with Amazon Music?

The app lets you access your Amazon Music collection wherever you go, allowing you to download or stream music you've purchased on Amazon. You can also play any music that you have stored locally on your device. Additionally, the app gives you the ability to download music from your cloud library for offline playback. The Amazon Music app includes access to the Store, boasting an impressive selection of over 28 million songs.

Although the playbar consists of the usual audio controls and features, the “X-Ray” function will surely catch your eye since it provides interesting facts about your favorite songs. Sadly, not all tracks have this feature. If you're a paid member, you'll get much more out of the app since it lets you stream music without ads. Plus, you can import your playlists from Apple Music, Deezer, Spotify, and other supported music platforms, so you don’t have to create a brand-new playlist.

The three subscription versions

Amazon Music provides users with three subscription options — Free, Prime, and Unlimited, each with its own features and cost. The appropriate choice of subscription depends on individual preferences and budget. The Free version is the most basic subscription, offering access to thousands of playlists and stations. However, the songs are on shuffle — except for tracks in All-Access playlists — and advertisements are played during the listening experience. Free users are also unable to skip to certain parts of the song or take advantage of offline playback.

Meanwhile, the Prime subscription is accessible to users with an Amazon Prime account. The Prime subscription includes over 100 million songs, along with a vast array of playlists and stations, without any interruptions from advertisements. The subscription also enables offline playback. Unfortunately, this subscription level still leaves music in non-All-Access playlists on shuffle mode and does not provide access to Ultra HD and HD audio.

Lastly, Amazon Music's Unlimited version is accessible without an Amazon Prime membership, but it does mandate a monthly or annual subscription fee. It offers all the features provided by the lower versions, including HD and Ultra HD audio. Additionally, they can access the growing selection of spatial audio playback. On top of unlimited skips and high-definition audio quality, offline playback is also supported at this subscription level. Users can try Amazon Music Unlimited for free for three days, though.

Explore the app

Navigating around the Amazon Music app is easy. You’ll find the “Home,” “Find,” “Library,” “Alexa,” “and “Upgrade” tabs at the bottom of the screen, while the “Activity” and “Settings” icons and “Music” and “Podcasts” buttons at the top. The “Home” tab is packed with all sorts of audio content, from the tailored “My Soundtrack” to All-Access playlists to Amazon Music Originals.

You can also explore playlists and discover songs in “Find.” On the other hand, the “Library” tab includes the sections “Made for You” and “Recently Played” as well as your downloaded or purchased songs, followed playlists, and the like. It even boasts a built-in filter for easy sorting of content.

There are some irritating things about the Amazon Music app, however. For instance, you have to redownload all songs, as they are deleted every time your sign out. Unfortunately, there is a tendency for the app to get stuck at “Downloading” status. Sometimes, it crashes or the audio stops playing all of a sudden. These issues still occur even if you restart or reinstall the app.

Not the best

Overall, Amazon Music is a mediocre audio player that is only worth downloading if you have ordered lots of music through Amazon and are an Amazon Prime subscriber. While it does have a vast collection of songs and podcasts and a cool “X-Ray” feature, the technical and performance issues will surely make most listeners steer clear of the app.  If you want seamless access to great music, try Spotify or Pandora
